Reading between the lines

We read from the writings of the alleged art critic and doctor Louis de Marsalle in front of selected works. However, we now know that Louis de Marsalle was the product of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's imagination in order to praise his own artistic work. Kirchner - a true professional in self-marketing. He also described his graphic works and techniques as Louis de Marsalle. These texts were very well received by art connoisseurs: "This kind of factual view of art, without flattery and quixotic puffery - has a wonderfully calming and soothing effect," wrote Gustav Schiefler to Kirchner on 12 January 1923.
